Always looking for ways to provide a broader range of learning experiences to her students, Hope Mikkelson, a science teacher at Verona Area High School in south central Wisconsin, was excited to learn of the suite of free STEM lesson plans from NanoSonic. In partnership with Constructors Association of Western Pennsylvania (CAWP), Ladders of Opportunity, and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Simcoach Games has developed the Future Road Builders game. This game addresses a concerning talent gap seen by employers by allowing people to explore the field and develop skills.

Saint Louis University’s Summer Transportation Institute is a non-residential camp for students from high schools in the St. Louis metropolitan area featuring a series of field trips, activities, games, and lectures.
Experiential learning is central to the institute’s curriculum. The camp provides opportunities for students to collaborate. “They learn the value of collaboration through hands-on activities, rather than hearing it from us,” said Kianfar. “We want them to see that they can solve real-world problems. They learn they have the ability and background to become engineers.”
Career awareness efforts are most effective when they inspire interest among young people. An event hosted by the Transportation and Logistics Management Research Center at the University of Wisconsin–Superior is designed to do just that. By partnering with a local council of the Girl Scouts, Dr. Richard Stewart, the center’s director, has developed a day-long event that brings elementary and middle-school-aged girls to the UW–Superior campus to explore careers in transportation.
With case studies, videos, a report, and an online toolkit, national non-profit, Jobs for the Future (JFF), provides a model for implementing work-based learning programs for community colleges.
The goal of the Transportation Careers Curriculum Project is to develop a pipeline of talented students who are interested in careers in the transportation field, and the content provided on the site helps prepare teachers to join this effort.
